Back to School - a (new) desk: a perfect start!

The time has come... Most children went back to school today full of enthusiasm. Some for the first time, others to the next class. A new school year brings new chances and possibilities. While they may have secretly longed for a little extra holiday, that first day of school is always exciting. We hope that everything went well for everyone.

With the start of a new school year, comes the time for renovations in the children's room. A fresh makeover perhaps? A new bed, a different cupboard or a fresh lick of paint on the walls? And what about a (new) desk? Now that your child will be getting more and more homework, they will also be spending more and more time in their own room. How great would it be if they had a special place there to work on their assignments in peace?

The Perfect Desk
Choosing the right desk can be a challenge. You may be wondering what height we are talking about and whether your child actually needs a desk. In this blog, we will answer all your questions.

Establishing good habits can start at a young age. Introducing a table or desk in their bedroom or playroom helps them get used to sitting at a table and chair while doing different activities such as painting, drawing or reading. So, even at a young age, a desk or table with a chair or stool can be very helpful.

The Ideal Height
The right height for a desk depends on your child’s age and height. When sitting at the desk, both feet should be flat on the floor, with their hips and knees at a 90° angle. Your child’s knees should not touch the table top when their feet are on the floor. That’s when you know you’ve got the right height. Back support is just as important, so opt for a chair with a backrest rather than a stool. However, a stool can be helpful when they’re younger and don’t sit for long periods of time.

While there is a lot of information online about the ideal height of children’s desks, it’s hard to pinpoint specific ages to heights, since every child grows at his or her own pace. Here’s a general guideline:

  • Child length 90 - 109 cm (2-4 years) - table height <52 cm
  • Child length 110 - 120 cm (5-6 years) - table height 52 cm
  • Child length 121 - 130 cm (6-8 years) - table height 57 cm
  • Child length 131 - 145 cm (8-10 years) - table height 64 cm
  • Child length 146 - 160 cm (11 - 13 years) - table height 70 cm
  • Child height from 160 cm or taller (14 years and older) - table height >75 cm

However , now you often do not find so many types of desks with these different heights.  Standard dimensions are often used, such as a height of 50 cm for children up to about 6 years and 75 cm for children from 6 years. Because children grow quickly, many parents choose a sustainable option: a desk that they can grow into and that grows with them. An adjustable desk is also a practical and sustainable choice.

Age Groups
For children over 6 years old, a desk in the nursery is an absolute 'must-have' for homework and other creative activities. Although they like to use their room for more than just schoolwork, the desk really becomes an essential part at this age. Of course, this doesn't mean that younger children don't benefit from a desk. Even from around 2 years old, a special place to draw, do puzzles and read books can be very useful.

Variety and Style
Desks are available in different types, sizes (desktop surface) and with or without storage space. The choice depends of course on your budget and personal style.
